Made our way from Amsterdam to St. Goar, Germany. Best known for the world's largest hanging cuckoo clock, castles, Lorelei Rock and the Rhine River. Also known for Eiswein or Ice Wine (dessert wine). It's called Ice Wine because it's produced from picking grapes off the vine when frozen. A quaint, sleepy little town - St. Goar is a nice place to stopover for the night and relax on your way to the bigger cities of Germany.
This was one of our first "notorious" shopping excursions with Contiki that I read so much about online. Basically they take you on an excursion with a demonstration and an opportunity to shop at the end (in this case it was authentic beer steins). How this works is they offer you a special price when everything is already marked up really high. The reason for this is because the Trip Manager gets kickbacks on all of the purchases you make. There were a lot of mixed feelings about this online from other travelers but I actually didn't mind it. The excursions were fun, the demonstrations were interesting and the products they were trying to sell you were actually pretty cool. I didn't shop at all of them but I did at some. Yes, I GOT SUCKED IN... IT HAPPENS AND IT IS OKAY.
Stayed at Hotel Montag located right on the Rhine River. Temperature was starting to get a bit chilly so we kept the room windows closed. A lot of the hotels we stayed at didn't have AC. There are heaters in each room but we didn't know how to use them...
Needed to pack an overnight bag for this hotel because there was no elevator for heavy luggage. Another thing about Europe... a lot of the hotels don't have elevators. If they do, most times they only fit one person at a time. The rooms were okay. The bathroom was very small. The beds felt hard at first but I remember having a pretty good night sleep.
Had a delicious included dinner then went to a wine tasting in an old cellar. Got to try the Eiswein. Very sweet, but delicious!
